Final Project Evaluation:

This part of the brief was fun. I like English Literature anyway so when I got the chance to research and create a make up for a character from a book that I've grown up loving. I did find some challenges along the way. I struggled to research my character because it's more her presence that is mentioned in the book more than her physical appearance. This is arguably something that could work in my favour because it gave me more creative license to do as I pleased and saw fit. 

As for the continuity assessment this was me well and truly out of my depth. I can do make up and I can do technically challenging make up but I have never been expected or asked to create make up that looks identical (picture perfect in this case) two weeks in a row. I didn't think it would be that difficult. Week one was the easier because I didn't have a photo to work from, but during week two I found it more challenging because I had a goal to work to.

I have enjoyed the challenges this unit has given me. I feel I have left with a really strong knowledge of basic special effects now with is something I shall be practicing over the summer break. Even though I haven't taken this as my option next year I will be trying to include some basics in shoots because it's really good fun to shoot. I'm glad I made really detailed notes for my technical file.

Other than Digital Image, this has been my favourite part of the project.

Hannibal is something that is really close to my heart so I was  really excited to do this. I put a lot of effort into this. I used research from the films, the books and the tv series to make my characters as true to the Hannibal legacy as possible.

I really enjoyed trying to make these characters and their stories fit into the series. I thought really hard about what make up I would be doing because I wanted to include SPFX but I wasn't very confident in my ability.

I thought I could have played it safe and done not much SPFX but I thought it wouldn't have been a challenge then. I'm really glad that I made the effort to do something more challenging.

If I could go back and change anything I would have blended the the stippled colouring more. In the photos it looks good, I just feel as though I did my designs justice.

I like the techniques that I used. Some were ones that I had struggled with so it felt like such an achievement to execute it well. I love my mood board, these are also something I struggle with. This is the work I feel so proud of. I like all of these. Some of my favourite photos I've taken.

I'll be editing the photos and making them look like the posters that advertised the tv series.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this lesson. I mean, we don't really see 'horror' make up on the runway. As much as I'd love to see this I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.4

Kat talked us through what we were going to do this lesson and I felt pretty excited. We got to pick a photo to recreate. I really liked the one that looks all smudged lace. 

Products used:

• Kryolan Foundation
• Dermacolour concealer
• Illamasqua Translucent Powder
• Satin Skin Base
• Kyrolan Supracolour in Red, Blue, White, Lilac, Black
• Isopropyl alcohol 
• Brushes

1. Cleanse, tone and moisturise
2. Apply skinbase
3. Apply foundation and blend well
4. Apply Concealer
5. Using a latex sponge to apply the lilac shade, mix a little bit of red.
6. Blend it out. I've applied it along the cheek bones and across the eyelids
7. Stipple in some reds and soften the edges with your fingers
8. Using  a brush, 'press' some white onto the cheek and around the eye. It'll look like petal shades
9. Using a clean brush soaked in Isopropyl alcohol, gently press this onto the skin, when it drips down it'll cause the make up to bleed. This giving a really cool effect.

Tools/Equipment

• Heat protection spray
• Heated Rollers
• Curling tongs. Size will depend on the desired outcome.
• Roller pins or Clips
• Pin tail comb
• Hair Brush
• Hair pins
• Bobby pins
• Hair elastics

Method:

1. Brush all of the hair so it's free of knots.
2. Spray Heat protection spray into it and brush through
3. Using a pintail comb, make a centre parting
4. Take the white rollers and put them in the front of the hair. It's important to not too much hair in the roller or you won't get the results you want. As a guide line it's important to take a section of hair that is the same width as the roller you are using. When putting hair in rollers use your pin tail to tuck in and of the rebellious ends. This gets easier with practice. It can feel really frustrating to start with.
5. You need to put 4 white rollers in along the hair line. It's the shape you want to achieve. Secure this with the roller pins or the clips. I prefer the pins as the clips can sag a little bit.
6. When you've let the rollers cool, take the hair out and style as desired. You can use loose sections of the hair and put them into a ponytail or a bun and pin the lifted curls you've created with the rollers and pin it in a pretty design.
7. Roll the hair back on itself and pin it in place. Almost like a 1950s hairstyle you see that pin up girls have
8. With the front two sections, create loops and pin at the top of the roll you've created
9. Lightly backcomb the crown and pin in place
10. Hairspray to finish

I was excited to do this because it wasn't overly complicated and Cam is really photogenic. The make up wasn't overly taxing. It was just about getting it right.

THIS IS THE MOST PERFECT DESIGN!

Well, I think so.

I'll be doing the cut on the neck that Abigail gets from her father. Instead it will be Claudia who does it. It won't be as deep, it's more 'proving a point' wounding and he's a young hunter who Hannibal feels he has taught well enough.

I'll be doing a collodion based cut. A wound with a hunting knife would be thin and there would be no ridges or tears.

I intend to do a fair few layers of this to get depth.

I'll use some dark reds to make the wound look deep and then i'll fill some parts with flesh scratch. I'll then add a small about of Kensington Gore and stipple it on to make the skin look sore and put some in the wound.

I'll put some of the blood in his mouth and on his chin as though he's been choking up blood because his mouth would fill with blood with this kind of wound.

I like his hair looking a little bit messy it gives the impression of a struggle.

I'll add some blood to his fingers so it looks like he's tried to stop the bleeding.

Overall, I'm really happy with this design. I think it's going to be really fun to shoot. 

Quentin is supposed to be the victim in this. It's almost like a Stockholm Syndrome victim. It doesn't matter how horrible Claudia is to him, he's always there for her.

On this face chart I wanted it to look like he'd been beaten up by Claudia. I was aiming for black eyes and bruising to the face.

This really touched a nerve for personal reasons and I won't be doing this. The more I thought about it the more it didn't fit the series theme.

Hannibal always made quick and clean kills. (When he wasn't trying to prove a point) I stepped away from this idea quickly despite the fact doing bruises are my strong point.

This was quite the challenge. I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was, but trust me. It's the first time in about 8 years that I've done make up on a man. I asked Cameron to make sure he was clean shaven so I made these designs with the goal to do this with.

When thinking about what special effects make up I wanted to do I found it quite a challenge. Part of me wanted to do chunks of flesh missing from his cheeks which would be a homage to Hannibal Rising.

I think that I'll just draw up the idea and see how it looks on paper before I select my final idea.

I am intending on keeping the base as a normal application. I don't want to detract from the SPFX.

I'll be looking 'cut' out the cheeks in two fillet-like steaks. 

This is the design I will be using for my Claudia character. Combining elements from both of the previous face charts.

This time I've added a little bit of eye shadow, not too much but the colours you'd see on a china doll. I used a couple of matte shades and the smallest amount of shimmer.

I'm looking at concealer to cover any blemishes but not looking to use too much because the foundation is pretty high coverage.

I won't be using blusher, I don't want it to look too human-like . I like the look of powdered skin instead.

I've decided to put wax around the edges of the horns to make them look like they are bursting through. I'll add some flesh scractch and use a 'watered down' foundation mix to cover the wax. I'll use a tiny fan brush to apply some fake blood into the wax wounds around the horn wounds.

I've stuck with the dark lipstick I just think it looks right.

I added a tiny bit of blood the the middle of her lips and let a little bit trickle out the side of her mouth. Overally I'm really happy that this is my final design. I can't wait to do it.

I tried to make this a little more intimidating.

Instead of giving her a white face I intend on using my model's natural skin tone. Thankfully Megan is naturally pale so it works. I felt the white base wouldn't work too well as she was only in the early stages of being a Wendigo.

I felt she would be washed out so I gave her a really dark lip colour. I like how this contrasts with the skin.

I've taken away some of the nose marking that made her look like Doe-like. I thought the baby horns were enough.

There still seems to be something missing.

I was really excited to do these face charts. The first one consists of a snow white base. I am going to give Claudia doe horns. As to me, she is becoming the Wendigo.

The theme throughout Hannibal is light and dark. In the series, Will is the light side to Hannibal as Hannibal is the dark.

I thought the idea of the White Stag would be really good.

I also included Doe-like make up, I made her look like a white Bambi. I love this because she's psychotic but she still looks innocent. Doe's aren't seen as intimidating so it's almost like a contradiction.

I've managed to make some horns out of a Vera Wang perfume bottle lid. I thought it was quite innovative.

I really like this but I think it's too much and doesn't fit in with the show as well as it could.

Quentin

Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.

Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.


I knew as soon as there was an opportunity to shoot a male character who I was going to use. My dear friend Cameron. He is just going to be perfect for this. Considering the amount of time that Claudia spends reading (not watching TV) she's dreamt up the perfect guy. To me, Cameron is what I like to call classically beautiful. He has incredible eyes and bone structure to die for.

Well dressed characters are such a reoccurring theme within in this tv show that it was essential that Cameron wore a suit.

With Claudia's obsession with trying to get Hannibal's attention has made Quentin look similar to Hannibal in regards to his demeanour.

The word I chose for Quentin was 'The Woods' I know it might have seemed a weird choice but originally, he was going to be the Wendigo.  Instead I'll be treated him as a hunted animal. In a temper tantrum Claudia cuts his neck. (This is originally what happened to Abigail) He tried to hide from Claudia during one of her angry moods and she stalked him around the placement and ends up hurting him

Hannibal had taught her how do to stitches so she would 'save him'

All Quentin wants to do is make her happy. Claudia is convinced that he is now Hannibal's protege and that he loves Quentin more than he loves her.

You can't help but feel bad for Quentin, all he wanted to do was make her happy.
